Tips for students about to study abroad

Studying abroad can be one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences. If you have decided to take the plunge, get excited! There is a lot to prepare for and plenty of things to learn. Here are some tips to consider before making the move:

-    Research thoroughly
Moving to another country requires a lot of planning. Research the area you will be staying in to explore all transport options, nearby stores and helpful amenities you can make use of. Proceed to plan your budget and take note of all purchases you will need to make, while always keeping money stored for emergency expenses. You will also want to research the cultural differences and norms in the area you will be moving to in order to adapt to your surroundings.

-    Store all necessary documents safely
Part of your planning process entails figuring out which documents you will need in your new area of residence. Travel documents, necessary health-related paperwork, bank details, university enrolment documentation and proof of qualifications… the list varies! Always keep these organised in a safe place, as they may be required for several bureaucratic procedures in a new country. You should also keep a copy for each.

-    Prioritise a social life
When studying abroad, some students tend to focus entirely on their studies and planning related to the move. These are both extremely important, but without friends, living in a new country can seem daunting. Make time for after-school activities with your classmates and consider signing up for new activities. You could also join online expatriate communities, which always help to meet new people!

-    Don’t overpack
Carrying a load of unnecessary items can make your move a lot more stressful. Do not travel with items you could easily purchase in your new area of residence, and there is no need to pack in your whole wardrobe either. Always pack the necessities and classic items of clothing that can be restyled multiple times. If you end up liking the new place or choose to extend your move, you can always ship more items later!
