Your so-called ‘dream job’ needn’t be that. A dream. Even though it might sound unattainable right now, if you’re just starting out on your chosen career path, or looking for a completely different career, with the right mix of forethought, planning and persistence, there’s nothing that could stop you from claiming your ideal role.
Of course, a lack of experience can be a common stumbling block when you’re looking for your first job or having a career change. Focus on your skillset and qualities that could apply to the duties you’ll hold in your new role. As an example, IT skills, knowledge of sales, client relations and project management typically go a long way on the majority of career paths.
You may think you know yourself pretty well, but it’s a good idea to undertake a self-assessment of your values, determine the ways you like to work and what your principal interests are. Look into industries and specific jobs that match your skills and interests. Do your research, undertake informational interviews and even visit businesses within your chosen field.
This may mean undertaking a part-time internship within your chosen field whilst still working in your current job, or taking classes or workshops in your spare time to gain experience and boost your skillset at the same time.
Without family commitments and other financial burdens, making a career change is far simpler. As such, people in their 20s and 30s with a greater degree of flexibility typically find it easier to make the change. Nevertheless, an increasing number of baby boomers are now abandoning the world of traditional employment and opting for alternative careers. It’s never too late!
