L&D opportunities a key factor when choosing job offers

The findings from a new survey have revealed 92% of candidates consider learning and development (L&D) opportunities a key factor when it comes to selecting job offers. The research, undertaken by IMC e-learning solutions provider, showed an increasing trend amongst workers wanting employers to offer additional opportunities, the so-called ‘Great Upskill’. These latest findings show a push for the UK government to boost upskilling efforts for current employees following a request for help by the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy committee.

Skills and training

A rising number of businesses are requesting soft skills training, according to Inspirational Coaching founder, Stephen Adams: “In particular, the demand for techniques to develop essential skills such as communication, resilience and problem solving have seen a significant upturn.” He added that learning and development departments should rethink their strategies. Indeed, rather than using a “sheep dip one-size-fits-all” approach, these departments should implement a consultative stance allowing employees to create and adapt their own learning. “This would provide greater inclusivity and be more appropriate for generations,” Adams commented, stating that highlighting the development of essential skills would result in “a significantly higher return on investment” than increasing salaries.

Talent shortages

Due to insufficient skilled workers, many firms in the UK have reported a shortage of talent. Indeed, six times as many businesses are now reporting skills gaps, says a poll by Manpower, which is a 13% rise compared to 2013. In addition, a poll by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development showed 47% of employers had responded to talent shortages with upskilling. According to Latitude HR director, Samantha Mullins, people have been “seeking changes” since the Great Resignation. This could be a career or lifestyle change or perhaps promotion. She cautioned that should a company’s talent management approach not be in line with its learning and development strategy, newly skilled employees may look for employment elsewhere.
