From student life to starting your career: Be prepared!

Job-seeking for the first time can be a daunting experience. The transition from student life to the world of work is a huge step, but there are things you can do to ensure you’re as prepared as possible to find and start your first job.

 

What jobs are out there?

Knowing what jobs are open to you is one of the first stumbling blocks to overcome when you initially start job hunting. Doing your research beforehand will be a big help. Just recognising job titles to start off with will help you immensely. Most roles that are aimed at new graduates are typically upfront about this, but boosting your knowledge about your industry’s jobs market will help to cherry pick the more suitable positions for you.

 

Experience

Naturally, having little or no experience when job seeking can be a hindrance, but try to find ways to gain as much experience as you can now. Look out for work experience placements or internships to get a foothold in your industry. Having hands-on experience with the type of businesses you want to work for is seen as a massive plus for employers. 
And as well as looking good on your CV, practical experience can help you to grow your professional network, meet others working in your industry who may be able to inform you of any future job opportunities.
